Quilt made with Cotton & 'Dry Clean Only' Poly's - Should I Prewash?
I know it's already a huge debate, whether or not to pre-wash your cottons before quilting them, but that's not what I'm looking for here. I am making a quilt that has some blocks made from a taffeta that is dry clean only, which means those blocks will not pre-washed; so should I also not prewash my cotton blocks? Does cotton shrink when dry cleaned same as for when run through a washer/dryer? Does bleeding still occur during dry cleaning? If shrinkage and bleeding generally do not occur, then I will not pre-wash the cotton, so I guess that's my question.
Anyone have experience making a mixed quilt like this?
The quilt is being made for someone I know personally, and I will instruct them to dry clean only, but even still, they don't do their own laundering, my parents actually work for them as live-in help, so I can just tell my mom to make sure it doesn't get washed. Although I may wash a sample of the poly anyway just to see.
As others said..do a test wash.. to avoid fraying on the taffeta, sew a little "quiltlet", using small scraps of the different fabrics...sew them onto a piece of cotton muslin...making sure to really sticth down the taffeta's edges...wash as you would any cotton garment.
I have five or six prom dresses that say to dry clean only...all but one washed perfectly...wrinkle free...one had to be pressed, as it wrinkled. A couple of them frayed a bit. at the seams. This is the main reason for them being dry clean only...they fray easily...and also they lose body in the wash...which in a quilt...not a problem.
