Bing Maps opens its programming interface
At the Summit Tech Ed 2010, the development team of Bing announced the opening of a programming interface to the developer community. Specifically, the mapping service of Bing Maps gain new layers of information.
The U.S. version of Bing Maps
already offers some thirty "applications" to display on a map with different data types. This feature requires Silverlight. Thus it is possible to view the latest postings on Twitter, get the traffic line, take knowledge of local events, enjoy the urban graffiti or retrieve photos from Flickr for a specific monument.
Now, Microsoft is handing over to developers, and we imagine some additional layers such as a road map of the radar. For companies that could also be an opportunity to map their stores or restaurants by adding custom information for each (opening hours, menus, contacts, photos ...).
Re: Bing Maps opens its programming interface
Good plan to compare it with Google Maps. Basically we will also need Silverlight 4 to be installed on our system and after installation maybe some Windows Update and so on...

How do I create a custom search query usable from a web page?
I want to create a page on my site where I have a form to enter a keyword. That keyword would then be combined with several different phrases, searched through, say, Google or Yahoo or Bing, and have the results returned.
For example, if I had a website about "bacon", and I wanted a custom search engine that allows someone to put in a word, like "chocolate", and it would search "chocolate" + "bacon" + "recipes", and "chocolate" + "bacon" + "video". Stupid example, but hopefully you get the point...combining the user input with some specific phrases, and having the results returned.
Any thougths on how I do something like this?
You'd use Javascript to trigger the form submitting, then you'd modify the DOM to replace the query text with whatever, and allow the form to continue submitting.
